Why Podcasts Matter for Aspiring Digital Marketers

When I started in digital marketing, there wasn't much information on how to actually do it. It was fairly new (yes, I'm old). Even when I was being taught, I could absorb only so much in school. This is why I give students definitions and theory when I teach, but what they need to learn is how to do digital marketing practically.

Podcasts have helped bridge that gap.

They’re not a replacement for hands-on work, but they can offer insights that textbooks and lectures just can’t. Still, you can’t just listen. You have to practice what you learn.

The best podcasts aren’t just entertaining background noise, they offer something useful right away. I recommend shows that either give clear, actionable advice or open a window into the daily life of a digital marketer. Both are equally important.

One podcast I listen to is Humans of Martech. It’s a bit more technical than some others, but it’s worth it. What I love is how it goes behind the scenes. You get to hear from the people behind major brands and realize they’re not superheroes.

They make mistakes. They pivot. They learn. That kind of honesty is powerful, especially for students who might think everyone else has it all figured out.

If you’re new to podcasts, don’t overthink it. Just pick one and start listening. Set a simple goal and listen. Maybe just one or two episodes a week. You will learn about all sorts of topics from social media strategy to paid ads, SEO, and AI.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything at first. When something clicks, try to implement that digital marketing strategy in your next project.

That’s where the real learning happens.
